With Virginia’s high humidity and summer rain, even the most well-built decks may be coated with a layer of mildew or show early signs of rot. If you’re looking at your list of tasks to complete before summer ends, take a look at your own deck – could it use a makeover?
While you may not personally mind the way your deck looks, a proper makeover can actually extend its life and make your task list easier next year, and you’ll likely love the results. Here’s what you’ll need to do:
- Clear your deck. It may seem obvious, but make sure you clear everything off of your deck! Leaving objects behind because they are heavy or difficult to move means you’ll have to go back later and cover those spots when you do decide to move that object. You don’t want to drag out all of your equipment just for a grill-sized spot!
- Clean your deck. This step sounds simple, but for the best possible job, you’ll want to find a good cleaner to use alongside a pressure washer. Pressure works stocks a variety of chemicals and cleaners made specifically for wood surfaces, and even offer equipment rentals – our experts can help you find the perfect one! Use a pressure washer with a lower PSI to avoid damaging the wood, and be sure to read our pressure washer safety tips.
- Stain and seal. Pressure washing your deck will certainly get rid of mildew and stains, but staining and sealing the wood will help prevent future water damage and extend the life of it. It will also make your deck look completely new! Check out our selection of sealants.
After you have completed your deck makeover, be sure to let it dry for at least 24 hours before using it. Contact your nearest Pressure Works location for all of your pressure washer needs!
